About the Lab

Spatial Tissue Biology of Disease

The organs and tissues of our bodies are built from many different kinds of cells that interact closely with one another. In disease, the states of these cells, their positions, and the way they communicate all change. Our research centers on spatial tissue biology: understanding which cells are present, where they are, and what they are doing. By combining microscopic morphology, spatial omics, and molecular and cell biology, we aim to see tissue structure and cellular function as a single, integrated picture. Focusing on tumors, kidney disease, and inflammatory disease, we study how cells interact within tissue in order to understand how disease arises and progresses, and to find clues that may lead to new therapies.

Area 01

Tissue Microenvironment & Spatial Biology

Using spatial transcriptomics (Xenium In Situ) and multiplex immunostaining (PhenoCycler), we map cell states and spatial interactions within tissue. We are investigating how immune cells and stromal components organize the tumor microenvironment across multiple cancer types, and extending our approach to inflammatory conditions to understand shared and distinct cellular architectures.

Area 02

Renal Pathology & Multimodal Morphology

We apply transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and low-vacuum scanning electron microscopy (LVSEM) to characterize ultrastructural features of renal pathology — spanning hereditary nephropathies, transplant biopsies, and inflammatory kidney disease. By integrating AI-assisted morphological analysis, we aim to quantify changes that are difficult to detect by conventional light microscopy alone.

Area 03

Disease Models & Translational Research

We validate disease mechanisms using 3D spheroid cultures and other tissue models, and combine single-cell RNA-seq and transcriptomic analyses to reveal the molecular basis of morphological findings. Through collaborations with clinical departments and external research institutions, we apply our spatial and morphological frameworks to diverse disease contexts.
